Where to eat in Estrela, decided in three moves

Estrela takes its name from the Basílica da Estrela, the domed church on the hill that Queen Maria I built between 1779 and 1790 to keep a vow she made for the birth of a male heir. Its dome is visible from much of western Lisbon.

Across the road, the Jardim da Estrela opened to the public in 1852. Its official name is Jardim Guerra Junqueiro, after the poet, and its wrought iron bandstand once stood where Avenida da Liberdade runs today before it moved here in 1936.

Behind the garden walls sits the British Cemetery, set aside for English burials after a 1654 treaty and in use since the early 1720s. A memorial to the novelist Henry Fielding, who died in Lisbon in 1754, stands inside.

The district runs downhill to the São Bento Palace, home of the Portuguese parliament, with residential streets and neighbourhood tascas in between. Quiet streets, many small kitchens, and no obvious answer. That is the argument 531 settles.
